I started thinking about maternity photos around December, but after searching through the interwebs for a photographer I realized that professional maternity photos were out of reach (a.k.a. really expensive).
Don’t get me wrong – I think maternity photos are amazing. They are beautiful and they capture a special moment in time for you, your partner, and your baby. I think they are worth the pretty penny and I would splurge on them if I could. But unfortunately, though I probably could squeeze it in, I wasn’t comfortable in spending too much on them.
And I was right to hesitate. About a month ago, D and I took my trusty 2004 Honda Civic to the dealership to get her brakes changed. Sadly, we found out that she needed more than just the pads replaced. We ended up spending close to $1,200 that day. It was a doozy — a painful but necessary doozy. And though I hadn’t committed to professional maternity photos then, they were absolutely out of the question now.
So what’s a lady to do? Take them myself!
I’m not a professional and I will never pretend to be. I have no idea how to take photos and I resort to using Pinterest cheat sheets/tips I’ve pinned to my photography board OR texting D’s brother, Timothy, for quick help. I dilly dally with my three lenses because I find it to be a fun hobby. But unlike my other hobbies like baking and cooking, I haven’t picked up my DSLR as often as I would like or hope. (Kind of like me and running at this moment… But I plan on getting back to that as soon as I’m able.)
Though they aren’t top of line, I’m proud of these photos.
Using a cheap (in price not quality) tripod and remote I found on Amazon, D and I were able to take a bunch of photos. Like a ridiculous bunch. Many of them were out of focus. Some had D’s head cut off. Others didn’t have enough lighting. In the end, there were enough photos for me to sift through and pick out a handful that we both liked. From there, I used Aperture to clean the images up.
Though I wish I had splurged on some fancy, professional photos, I still love each of these captured moments just the same.
